ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to the 6th grade homerooms for winning the Can Food Drive. Together we collected 548 cans of food. Thank you to all of you for being so generous and thoughtful of the needs of others. This was an awesome display of kindness. You have all truly been a blessing to those who need help. The reward for this good work is "lunch" provided by the SGA.

Valentines Party - Friday February 10th starting at 12:30. Please remember to send $2.00 for pizza and bring a soft drink. Some students have volunteered to bring other refreshments. Each student needs to bring a Valentine Card for all their classmates. We have 17 students, a list will be provided. Refreshments and Valentines need to be at school by the day of the party.

Valentine's Day Party

Since Valentine's Day falls on a Tuesday this year, we will be having our party on Friday, February 10th.

We wanted to let our parents know so they can make plans concerning their child’s Valentine cards this weekend.

We will send another note home on Monday about the details of the party.

Dear Parents,
We are getting back into our regular routine after the holidays. Thank you for all your efforts to help your child with their homework assignments. All that they need to learn can't be taught in the classroom alone and this extra effort really does give them a tremendous advantage.

Reminders:
Students need to be prepared at the beginning of each day with the following supplies: paper, pencils, notebook, and completed homework.

As you will remember from the note that was sent home with students last week, the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades are piloting a program using approved electronic devices for reading AR books. Please note that the "approved devices", such as the Kindle and Kindle Fire, are devices that do not have a phone capability.

Edline Posting:
We were unable to take our reading and vocabulary test on Friday because I didn't feel that the majority of the class was ready for the tests. Therefore, the tests were postponed until today. For this reason there are no reading test scores to report on Edline.

Canned Food Drive:
Please send canned food for our Canned Food Drive collection. The deadline for this collection is Friday January 20th.

5th Grade Math
We are taking more time to review Section 2-2. Many of the students seem to need more time to master the skill of rounding numbers. Since this is an important building block for future skills, we have delayed the test that was scheduled for last week and therefore have no grades to post to Edline today.

My mother is in the hospital again after having been released earlier. She is doing better again and hopefully will be returning home either today or tomorrow.

Wednesday December 14th - Pizza Party - Please send a soft drink - School dismisses at regular time.

Thursday December 15th - Christmas Party - Students will need to bring a gift ($10-$15 value). Boys bring a gift suitable for a boy and girls a gift suitable for a girl. Gifts need to be wrapped. Students will only need to bring a drink and snack. We will have a cookie cake that was bought using money leftover from the field trip. School will be dismissed at 11:50.

Dear 5th and 6th grade parents,
We are all very excited about our field trip this Friday to Ft. Toulouse. We just wanted to ask all the students to please wear the Tie-die PLAS shirt. If they do not have that shirt please wear a PLAS shirt. Also, please wear tennis shoes as we will be outside all day. Each student and parent needs to bring a sack lunch. We want to be able to throw everything away. Drinks can be put in a cooler so please label your childs drink. Lunch will be picnic style so if each student will bring a beach towel to sit on that would be great. We will be eating lunch earlier than normal so we will not have a snack so please eat breakfast. There are vendors at Ft. Toulouse so if you would like to send money ($10-$15) that would be fine. The student will be in charge of keeping up with all belongings and money. We need two parents to volunteer to bring a cooler with ice for the drinks. We will be leaving the school around 8:00 the parent drivers need to be at the school by 7:30. You may park in front of our building. We will return to school around 2:30 for dismissal. Thank you so much for the support you give!!

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce Junior Ambassador Program has asked our school’s help in collecting teddy bears for the local police stations, hospitals, and other organizations. These teddy bears will be given out to children for comfort in their times of trouble. Drop off your teddy bears at the main office or Mrs. Carr’s office. We will begin on Wednesday and collect until Halloween. Teddy bears and stuffed animals should be 12 inches tall and they should be clean.

Dear Parents:

Welcome everyone to another great year at Pike Liberal Arts School. I look forward to getting to know each of you better. I hope you had an awesome summer, even if it did seem awfully short, just like mine. I am excited about all the opportunities we will have to learn and grow this school year. Now for a few things we need to remember to get us going on the "right track":

Homework

* Math homework will be assigned almost every night.

* All math homework will be maintained in a "five subject spiral notebook". Any additional sheets that are not bound in the notebook should be filed in the notebook's storage pockets.

* We will check and discuss all math homework in class the following day. Each student will be responsible for correcting any mistakes in their own homework assignments. These corrections will be noted with a red or blue pen. Parents, please monitor your child's progress.

* All homework assignments are written on the "homework board" in each homeroom and should be copied by the students to aide them in remembering all their assignments.

* Homework is 20% of the student's total grade in math. Obviously, it is important that students complete their homework assignments in order to maintain a high grade point averages. However, each days instruction is a building block toward a higher level skill. Therefore, it is even more important that they complete these assignments to insure that they master the skills that are being taught.
